West Suburban Living released their 2018 Best of the West list and DuPage County made the cut (in many categories). The selections are chosen by the readers of the magazine and there are almost 90 different categories on the list. We’ve narrowed down the list to highlight the DuPage County choices so that you can experience the “Best of the West” for yourself.
Downers Grove is home to Alter Brewing Company– “devoted to innovating beyond the confines of traditional styles in an uncompromising quest to produce beer of the highest quality.” This year, Alter was voted as the “Best Microbrewery/Brewpub” in the western suburbs. Plan a visit to the brewery and taste for yourself why the brewery was recognized as the best.
If beer isn’t your style, make a trip to Barbakoa for one of the “Best Margaritas.” Known for their tacos and tequila, Barbakoa serves up Latin cuisine in a vibrant, urban setting.
Head over to Downtown Downers Grove to see a movie at the historic Tivoli Theatre. First opening up in 1928 and still showing films today, the theater, without a doubt, deserves its title as “Best Movie Theater.”
Also downtown is the Downers Grove Farmers Market, a favorite among readers for “Best Farmer’s Market” in the area. The market is composed of over 100 vendors offering goods ranging from fresh foods to crafts and enjoy live entertainment while walking the market.
The Elmhurst Art Museum, centrally located in beautiful Wilder Park, was voted as “Best Art Gallery.” The highly regarded museum has a “reputation for adventurous undertakings—high caliber, ambitious exhibitions of contemporary and modern art and design, robust public programs, artist-led community projects, an exciting roster of art classes for people of all ages.” The museum is also the home to one of three existing houses in the United States designed by pioneering modern architect, Mies van der Rohe.
The McAninch Arts Center (MAC) at College of DuPage provides world-class entertainment right outside your door. The MAC offers exceptional musical, dance, theatre, comedy, and specialty entertainment making the venue a favorite for “Best Live Music” and “Best Live Theatre.” Click here to see what’s playing at The MAC this season.
Head over to Allgauer’s Restaurant at Hilton Lisle/Naperville for their award-winning “Best Sunday Brunch.” Brunch includes bubbly champagne and mimosas, fresh sushi and California rolls, an assortment of salads, all you can eat crab legs, traditional breakfast menu items, an array of desserts and plenty more.
While the Village of Lombard may be known for its lilacs, it’s also known for other things. Yorktown Center, a 1.5 million square-foot two-level shopping center, was selected as a favorite for “Best Mall/Shopping Center.” The center offers a wide array of specialty and department stores, dining options, fitness studios and entertainment.
Be sure to also visit the Shops on Butterfield and stop in at D.O.C. Wine Bar– ranked in the top for “Best Wine Bar.”
About a minute drive from Yorktown Center is the famous Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse. With a great reputation, it’s no surprise that the steakhouse ranked as a favorite among West Suburban Living readers for “Best Steak.”
Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse was voted as having the “Best Steak” across the western suburbs along with being voted as a favorite for “Best Outdoor Dining.” As the weather continues to get warmer, plan a visit to Gibsons to taste the highly renowned savory steak and see why it’s a favorite for outdoor dining.
Looking to switch it up a bit? Visit Mon Ami Gabi– voted as the “Best French Restaurant.” Stop by for Burger Tuesdays or sign up for one of their French Classics Cooking Class.
While you’re in the area, visit Oakbrook Center– the largest premier outdoor shopping center in the Midwest. With over 160 specialty stores, an expansive selection of department stores, and eclectic dining and entertainment, it’s no surprise that this shopping destination was voted as “Best Mall/Shopping Center.” Be sure to swing by the District- Oakbrook Center’s new and exciting destination, to try the famous Stan’s Donuts.
Oak Brook also ranked in the “Activities & Entertainment” category with Graue Mill and Museum as a “Best Historic Landmark/Attraction” and Fullersburg Woods as a “Best Park/Forest Preserve” and “Best Jogging or Running Path.”
Naperville Ribfest has been ranked in the top for “Best Festival or Fair.” This annual event is a can’t miss 4th of July concert and festival destination. Event includes internationally celebrated music artists, family-friendly activities and carnival, award-winning rib vendors and of course, an outstanding fireworks display.
Naperville was also recognized for Centennial Beach’s historic stone quarry in the “Best Area Waterpark” category. Centennial Beach proves to be a unique experience like no other due to it not being a pool or lake, it is often referred to as a local “swimming hole.”
DuPage Children’s Museum voted among the top for “Best Area Museum” ignites the potential of all children to learn through hands on activities.
Two Brothers is a well-known beer label that can be found beyond our regional area at restaurants, bars, breweries, grocery stores and more. Did you know that the first Two Brothers location is located here in DuPage County’s very own City of Warrenville? Stop by Two Brothers Tap House for a spirit and see why it was selected as a top pick for “Best Microbrewery/Brewpub.”
Carrying on the legacy of Robert R. McCormick, it is without doubt that Cantigny Park deserves its rankings as “Best Area Museum” and “Best Historic Landmark/Attraction.” The estate boasts over 29 acres of formal gardens, dozens of picnic tables and eating areas, 2.5 miles of well-maintained hiking trails, and the Robert R. McCormick and First Division Museums. Additionally, Cantigny Golf was recognized as a favorite for “Best Public Golf Course” with a 27-hole championship golf course, a year-round Golf Academy, a 9-hole Youth Links Course and a regular host of U.S. Open qualifying games. As if that isn’t enough, the Red Oak Room at Cantigny was also recognized in the category of “Best Sunday Brunch.”
Plan a trip to Downtown Wheaton to experience the “Best Farmer’s Market” of the western suburbs. The Wheaton French Market is open Saturdays (April – November) and is filled with treasures from local artisans as well as goods from around the world. Speaking of local, fuel your trip to the farmers market by stopping at River City Roasters on Main Street- selected as a favorite for “Best Coffeehouse.”
The beauty of Wheaton, extends throughout the City beyond Cantingy Park. Danada Park was voted a favorite for “Best Park/Forest Preserve” and Herrick Lake a favorite for “Best Jogging or Running Path.”
Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton scores a hole in one for golf, being voted as the number 1 “Best Public Golf Course,” along with being a highly regarded “Best Wedding Venue.”
